I’m glad to say that I got my first fall of my road bike today and it really wasn’t so bad after all.

Jack, Tommy, Mark and I went out for a ride this morning. As you probably know, it rained like hell last night and we figured it would be generally dry out there if we went looking for some new roads.

About 20 miles later, we found the W&OD trail near the intersection of Rt. 9 and Rt. 7 near Purcellville and decided to take that route home. As we came around the first corner, I failed to slow down enough and ended up letting my front wheel slide over a bit wide onto the yellow line that seperated the the two-way traffic on the trail. Man, that stuff is slick when it’s wet. I went down faster than I could comprehend.

Anyways… good thing I was wearing a helmet and sunglasses. Without them, I probably wouldn’t have been so lucky. Notice the indentation that one of the rocks left on my helmet. Other than that, a few bruises on my right shoulder, a banged up right knee and a bruised ego is all I got. Pretty sweet.

Good thing I was out there with the fellas to make sure I was OK and help me get my bike looked over for the 20 mile ride home. After that, the ride home was pretty damn quick. I’m not sure what drove us to going so fast, but it sure was fun.

Update: The only real damage to the bike was fixed with a $14.99 part from the local bike shop. Sweet. I thought it was going to be much worse when I saw the rear derailleur all bent out of shape. As for me, I’m all good to go.
