Hindsights
Late Friday nights are generally the most likely time that you’ll make your most important revelations. Or maybe it’s Tuesday afternoons. Or whatever. You get my point. It’s when you least expect it.
I’m lucky. Very lucky.
I’ve got a great set of friends that I’ve surrounded myself with. Some that have taken me under their wings both personally and professionally. Others that have been there during my strangest and most vulnerable moments. Good guys– each and every one of them.
Then there’s Sukhi. She’s marrying me and she rules– enough said.
Hindsight is always 20/20 isn’t it? It doesn’t seem so long ago that I believed I had the “perfect” life plan– go to school, become an engineer, … wait, then what?
Luckily for me, I really enjoyed what I studied in school. More importantly, I really enjoy my career now(which has nothing to do with computer engineering by the way).
Looking back, I can remember all the young people along the way that were “brainwashed” into thinking that they absolutely had to live out their parent’s personal dreams. Hey– I feel your pain, brown parents do it. In fact, I’m sure all parents do it to some extent. Hell, I’ll probably do it someday too.
Anyways, you’re probably wondering where I’m going with this mindless banter. Guy Kawasaki put up a commencement speech that highlights the 10 things he’s learned in the 32 years since he graduated… it hit home for me.
#10: Live off your parents as long as possible.
#9: Pursue joy, not happiness.
#8: Challenge the known and embrace the unknown.
#7: Learn to speak a foreign language, play a musical instrument, and play non-contact sports.
#6: Continue to learn.
#5: Learn to like yourself or change yourself until you can like yourself.
#4: Don’t get married too soon.
#3: Play to win and win to play.
#2: Obey the absolutes.
#1: Enjoy your family and friends before they are gone.
